Park School Science and Engineering Wing
The Park School Science and Engineering Wing in Baltimore, Maryland, is a 12,500 sq ft, two-story expansion of a state-of-the-art facility for learning, meeting, and collaboration.
The addition was made to encourage “cross-pollination” among scientific disciplines within the new building. The additional square footage allows for long-term, large-scale science and engineering projects, and includes dedicated engineering and robotics space.
The new hub connects students and faculty through high-visibility research, field study, and Park’s ISAMR (International Student-led Arctic Monitoring and Research) program. It enhances accessibility in and around the learning spaces and provides direct access to the stream and woods while serving as a backdrop for the Park’s iconic pond.
The Hord Coplan Macht team’s approach to the design was deeply rooted in the site’s context. Max Compact Exterior phenolic panels were utilized in Amazon, a rich woodgrain, prominent throughout the rainscreen facade and extending to the soffits and perforated sunshades.
The natural appearance enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal and establishes a harmony with its surrounding elements. The UV- and weather-resistance of the material ensures it will withstand the region’s natural conditions and retain its aesthetic.
Fundermax also meets the principles that support the building’s sustainable operations, linking to the school’s science and engineering programming.
